Nico Gonzalez

Nicolás “Nico” González Iglesias, often simply referred to as Nico González, is a Spanish professional footballer currently playing as a midfielder for Portuguese club FC Porto, on loan from FC Barcelona. Born on January 3, 2002, in A Coruña, Spain, Nico comes from a footballing family; his father, Fran González, was a legendary midfielder for Deportivo de La Coruña, a club Nico also spent time with in his youth.

Nico’s journey to the top began in the youth ranks of Montañeros CF before moving to Deportivo. In 2013, he joined FC Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, where he honed his skills and developed into a highly promising central midfielder. He quickly progressed through the various youth levels at Barcelona, impressing coaches with his technical ability, tactical understanding, and physical presence.

His potential was evident, and he earned his debut for Barcelona B in the Segunda División B during the 2019-20 season. His consistent performances for the B team earned him opportunities to train with the first team, and in August 2021, under then-manager Ronald Koeman, Nico made his official debut for Barcelona’s senior squad in a La Liga match against Real Sociedad. He came on as a substitute and immediately impressed with his composure and passing range.

During the 2021-22 season, Nico became a more regular feature in the Barcelona first team, often deployed as a central midfielder in a variety of roles. In the summer of 2022, Nico was loaned out to Valencia CF for the 2022-23 season. This move was intended to provide him with valuable first-team experience and the opportunity to play regularly in La Liga. However, his loan spell was cut short due to injury problems, and he returned to Barcelona in January 2023.

Recognizing the need for consistent playing time to reignite his career, Nico was loaned to FC Porto in the summer of 2023. The move to the Portuguese giants offers him a fresh start and the chance to compete in the Primeira Liga and potentially in European competitions.
