Delhi High Court

The High Court of Delhi, established on October 31, 1966, stands as one of India’s principal judicial bodies, holding jurisdiction over the National Capital Territory of Delhi. Prior to its formation, the High Court of Punjab held jurisdiction over Delhi. The establishment of the Delhi High Court marked a significant step towards ensuring efficient and accessible justice delivery within the region.

Located on Sher Shah Road in New Delhi, the court’s physical presence is as imposing as its legal authority. The Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court is the highest-ranking judge, responsible for overseeing the administration of the court and assigning cases to various benches. The court comprises a sanctioned strength of judges, including both permanent and additional judges, appointed by the President of India in consultation with the Chief Justice of India and other relevant authorities. The current Chief Justice is Justice Satish Chandra Sharma.

The Delhi High Court exercises both original and appellate jurisdiction. Original jurisdiction allows it to hear certain cases directly, particularly those involving fundamental rights violations, testamentary matters, company law, and intellectual property rights. Its appellate jurisdiction enables it to hear appeals from lower courts and tribunals within Delhi, ensuring a hierarchical system of justice.

The court plays a crucial role in upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the rights of citizens within Delhi. It handles a wide array of cases, ranging from criminal matters like murder and theft to civil disputes involving property, contracts, and family law. Landmark judgments delivered by the Delhi High Court have significantly shaped the legal landscape of India, impacting areas such as environmental law, constitutional rights, and commercial litigation.

Notable cases adjudicated by the Delhi High Court include matters related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, corporate governance, and the interpretation of various laws. Its pronouncements have often served as precedents for other courts across the country. The Delhi High Court actively promotes judicial reforms and embraces technological advancements to streamline its processes. Initiatives like e-filing and video conferencing have been implemented to enhance efficiency and accessibility, particularly during times of crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Delhi High Court Bar Association, a prominent association of lawyers practicing before the court, plays a vital role in advocating for the interests of its members and upholding the standards of the legal profession. The Association often organizes seminars, workshops, and legal aid programs to promote legal awareness and professional development.

The Delhi High Court continues to be a cornerstone of the Indian judiciary, contributing significantly to the administration of justice, the protection of fundamental rights, and the progressive development of the law in the National Capital Territory of Delhi and beyond.
