Österreichische Gesundheitskasse (ÖGK)

The Österreichische Gesundheitskasse (ÖGK), or Austrian Health Insurance Fund, is the largest social insurance provider in Austria, responsible for insuring the majority of the Austrian population. It plays a crucial role in the Austrian healthcare system, which is characterized by its universal access, high quality, and social solidarity.

Formed in 2020 through the merger of nine regional health insurance funds, the ÖGK aims to streamline operations, reduce administrative costs, and ensure consistent standards of healthcare across the country. The ÖGK operates on a principle of solidarity, meaning that contributions are based on income, while access to healthcare services is determined by need, not ability to pay. This ensures that everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status, has access to essential medical care.
