Thailand Prime Minister Paetongtarn

Paetongtarn Shinawatra, often nicknamed “Ung Ing,” is a prominent Thai politician and businesswoman hailing from the influential Shinawatra family. Born in 1986, she is the youngest daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and Potjaman Na Pombejra. Her political profile has risen sharply in recent years, positioning her as a key figure within the Pheu Thai Party.

While she initially pursued a career outside of politics, earning a degree in Political Science from Chulalongkorn University and a master’s degree in International Hotel Management from the University of Surrey in England, Paetongtarn’s connection to Thai politics is deeply ingrained. Her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, remains a controversial but undeniably impactful figure in modern Thai history, and her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra, also served as Prime Minister.

Paetongtarn’s formal entry into politics came with her appointment as the Chief Advisor on Participation and Innovation for Pheu Thai Party in 2021. She quickly gained traction with her energetic campaigning style and promises of economic reform, targeting a younger demographic and addressing concerns about income inequality and opportunity. Her charisma and ability to connect with voters have been widely acknowledged, drawing comparisons to her father’s popular appeal.

In the lead-up to the 2023 general election, Paetongtarn was one of Pheu Thai’s prime ministerial candidates. The party campaigned on a platform of economic revitalization, social justice, and reconciliation. While Pheu Thai won the most seats in the election, forming a government proved challenging due to the complex political landscape and the power wielded by the military-appointed Senate.

Following a period of political maneuvering and coalition building, Srettha Thavisin was ultimately chosen as Prime Minister, with Pheu Thai leading the coalition government. Although not Prime Minister herself, Paetongtarn remains a significant force within the party and the government. She currently holds a key leadership position within Pheu Thai and is often seen as a potential future leader. Her continued involvement in policy discussions and public appearances solidify her position as a rising star in Thai politics.
