Karoline Edtstadler
Karoline Edtstadler is an Austrian politician and lawyer serving as Minister for the EU and Constitution in the Austrian Federal Chancellery since 2020. A member of the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP), she has held various significant positions in Austrian and European politics.
Born in Salzburg in 1975, Edtstadler studied law at the University of Salzburg, graduating in 1999. Her career began in the judiciary, serving as a judge in Salzburg and later as a public prosecutor specializing in economic crime. This experience provided her with a strong understanding of legal frameworks and procedures, skills that would later prove invaluable in her political career.
Edtstadler’s entry into politics was relatively recent. She joined the ÖVP and quickly rose through the ranks. In 2019, Edtstadler transitioned from the judiciary back into Austrian politics, becoming a Member of the European Parliament. Following the Austrian legislative election in 2019, Edtstadler was appointed as Minister for the EU and Constitution in the coalition government formed by the ÖVP and the Green Party in 2020. In this role, she is responsible for coordinating Austria’s relationship with the European Union and overseeing constitutional matters within Austria. This includes navigating complex negotiations with the EU, implementing EU legislation in Austria, and working on constitutional reforms.
