Honoring Doubting Thomas: St. Thomas Day

St. Thomas Day, celebrated primarily on December 21st, commemorates the life and martyrdom of St. Thomas the Apostle, also known as Didymus, meaning “twin.” This day holds particular significance within various Christian traditions, especially in India where St. Thomas is believed to have established Christianity in the first century AD. While the date varies slightly in different denominations (e.g., July 3rd in the Syro-Malabar Church), the core essence of the commemoration remains the same: to honor the Apostle who initially doubted Jesus’ resurrection.

The most well-known biblical reference to St. Thomas is found in the Gospel of John. After Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, he appeared to his disciples. However, Thomas was absent. When the other disciples told him they had seen the Lord, Thomas famously declared, “Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the print of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe.” This statement earned him the moniker “Doubting Thomas.”

A week later, Jesus reappeared, this time with Thomas present. He invited Thomas to touch his wounds, prompting Thomas to proclaim, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus responded, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Beyond the Gospel narrative, tradition holds that St. Thomas traveled to India, specifically to the Malabar Coast, now part of Kerala, around 52 AD. He is credited with establishing seven churches and converting numerous people to Christianity. These Christians, known as the Saint Thomas Christians or Syrian Christians, trace their origins directly back to the Apostle’s ministry. Consequently, St. Thomas Day is a major feast day for them.

In India, St. Thomas Day is celebrated with various religious ceremonies, including special church services, prayers, and processions. Families gather together for festive meals, and traditional art forms like dance and music are often performed. The day serves as a reminder of the Apostle’s legacy and the enduring faith of the Christian community in India.

Outside of India, St. Thomas Day is observed in other Christian communities, albeit often with less fanfare. Churches may hold special services, focusing on themes of faith, doubt, and the importance of seeking truth. The figure of St. Thomas provides an opportunity for reflection on the challenges of belief and the courage required to question and ultimately embrace faith.
