Bahuda Yatra 2025: The Return Journey of the Gods
Bahuda Yatra, the return journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra to the Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, is one of the most significant events in the Hindu calendar. Anticipation is already building for the 2025 Bahuda Yatra, scheduled to take place on [Insert Date Here – Typically 9 days after Rath Yatra]. Following their nine-day sojourn at the Gundicha Temple, believed to be their birthplace, the deities embark on their homeward journey, retracing the path taken during Rath Yatra.
The atmosphere during Bahuda Yatra mirrors the fervent devotion and celebratory spirit of Rath Yatra. Lakhs of devotees throng the Grand Road (Bada Danda) in Puri to witness the pulling of the three majestic chariots: Nandighosa for Lord Jagannath, Taladhwaja for Lord Balabhadra, and Darpadalana for Devi Subhadra. The chariots, meticulously constructed anew each year, are symbolic representations of the deities’ journey through the material world. The rhythmic chants of “Jai Jagannath,” the resonating sound of conch shells, and the vibrant colours of the crowd create an unforgettable spectacle.
Before the chariots begin their return journey, a significant ritual called ‘Dakshina Moda’ takes place. The chariots are turned southward, facing the Shri Jagannath Temple, ready to be pulled back along the Bada Danda. This turning is itself a spectacle, requiring coordinated efforts from the priests, servitors, and devotees.
Like Rath Yatra, Bahuda Yatra is punctuated by several important rituals. ‘Chhera Pahanra’, performed by the titular king of Puri, involves sweeping the chariot platforms with a golden broom, symbolizing humility and selfless service to the Lord. This ritual underscores the equality of all before the divine.
Another noteworthy event during Bahuda Yatra is ‘Hera Panchami’. On the fifth day of Rath Yatra, Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Jagannath, visits the Gundicha Temple in search of her husband. Upset that Lord Jagannath has left her behind, she symbolically breaks a part of Nandighosa chariot and returns to the main temple. This playful and endearing ritual highlights the divine love and affection within the Jagannath family.
Upon reaching the Shri Jagannath Temple, the deities do not immediately re-enter the sanctum sanctorum. They are placed on the ‘Bahuda Mandap’ outside the temple, where devotees can continue to offer their prayers. The deities remain there until ‘Suna Besha’, the golden attire ceremony, takes place on the Ekadashi day. Adorned with gold ornaments, the deities give darshan to the devotees in their magnificent Suna Besha, a breathtaking sight.
Finally, on ‘Niladri Bije’, the deities are ceremoniously brought back into the sanctum sanctorum, marking the end of the Rath Yatra festivities. This entry is often depicted as a playful negotiation between Lord Jagannath and Goddess Lakshmi, signifying reconciliation and the joy of reunion.
Bahuda Yatra 2025 promises to be another grand celebration of faith, devotion, and cultural heritage. Millions will gather to witness this extraordinary event, seeking blessings from Lord Jagannath and celebrating the triumphant return of the deities to their abode.
