IAEA and Iran’s Nuclear Program

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) plays a crucial role in monitoring Iran’s nuclear program. As the world’s nuclear watchdog, the IAEA’s mandate includes verifying that nuclear materials are not diverted from peaceful uses to weapons programs. For Iran, this oversight has been particularly complex and politically charged.

The IAEA has continued to conduct inspections and report on Iran’s nuclear activities. The agency’s reports have documented Iran’s breaches of the JCPOA limitations. The IAEA has also raised concerns about Iran’s cooperation with investigations into undeclared nuclear material discovered at several locations. Resolving these outstanding safeguards issues is crucial for ensuring the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program.

The future of the IAEA’s role in Iran hinges on the broader diplomatic efforts to revive the JCPOA or reach a new agreement. Without a comprehensive agreement, the IAEA’s ability to provide credible assurance about the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program is significantly diminished. The agency’s work remains vital for international security and preventing nuclear proliferation.
